    Today: your Questura ≠ 'any police station'

    Permesso di soggiorno per protezione temporanea is handled by the Ufficio Immigrazione of the competent Questura. Polizia di Stato now confirms that the permit can be renewed on request through 4 March 2028. Booking method varies by Questura; many offices use PrenotaFacile.

    Why this matters: People go to a random commissariato and lose a day. Opening hours differ — check your Questura's page.

    Prepare military-obligation evidence — if the new condition applies to you

    Official Polizia di Stato guidance updated on 27 August 2026 confirms the new condition for temporary-protection applications: acceptable evidence can include a Ukrainian exit stamp or other suitable official documentation showing exemption from, or fulfilment of, military obligations.

    Why this matters: This is a conditional step; it does not mean every applicant must prepare a military document.

    At the Questura: application + ricevuta (receipt) — not the permesso yet

    At your competent Questura / Ufficio Immigrazione you file for permesso di soggiorno per protezione temporanea. The same visit often gives a ricevuta and sometimes codice fiscale — proof of filing, not the finished permesso.

    Why this matters: People confuse ricevuta with permesso and start work without papers. Schools may accept ricevuta while the permesso is printed.

    You should already have the ricevuta — check data and deadlines

    If you filed, the ricevuta confirms the Questura accepted the case. Check name, case number and what it says about the next visit / permesso. Codice fiscale is a separate ID for ASL and banks.

    Collect the permesso and plan ASL / anagrafe next

    Permesso di soggiorno per protezione temporanea is your status document for work, ASL and anagrafe. It is collected separately from the ricevuta; check validity on the card.

    Register with the SSN through your local ASL

    The special healthcare provisions for people displaced from Ukraine are extended through 31 December 2026. Practical registration with the Servizio Sanitario Nazionale is handled by the ASL for your domicile.

    • · Choose a GP and, for a child, a paediatrician

    Why this matters: The Questura handles the residence permit but does not register you with the SSN. Use the ASL for the health card, GP, and paediatrician.

    School

    Contact the local school directly. If the residence permit is still being issued, the school can use the Questura receipt showing that the application was submitted.

    • · Show the documents you have; if the permit is pending, show the Questura receipt
    • · Bring available school records so the school can place the child at the right level; do not delay the first contact only because a document is missing

    Why this matters: A family should not have to delay the first school contact only because the full document set is not yet available.

    Work with permesso or ricevuta — get a written contratto

    Permesso (or ricevuta while waiting) gives access to employment without a separate work permit for ordinary jobs. Show the document to the employer, not a chat promise.

    Anagrafe, SPID, renting — via Comune, not a '€500 package'

    After permesso and codice fiscale: anagrafe (address registration) at your Comune, SPID only through official providers, renting with a contract (watch Idealista/Subito scams).
